UGRL Memorial Match
In Honour of Martin Roddy MBE
UGRL is proud to host a special memorial match in honour of Martin Roddy MBE, who played a pivotal role in shaping the club and supporting generations of student athletes during their time as a coach. This event is a chance for the entire rugby community — past and present — to come together in recognition of their enduring contribution to the sport and to our university.
Martin Roddy MBE served as a coach of UGRL, and during that time left a deep and lasting impact on players, staff, and the wider university sports community. Known for his passion for the game, commitment to player development, and unwavering support for the club, Martin was more than a coach — he was a mentor, a leader, and a driving force behind the club’s culture and progress.
His influence extended beyond the pitch, helping to build a sense of unity and purpose that defined the club’s identity for years. Many players credit Martin with shaping their character both as athletes and as individuals, and this match serves as a testament to that legacy.
The memorial match will feature a competitive yet celebratory fixture between current members of the university rugby club and a team made up of club alumni, many of whom played under Martin. The match is intended not only as a tribute but as a celebration — of rugby, community, and the shared history that connects us all through the club.
